Introduction

This document has been written for newbie users to familiarize themselves with the MemoServ commands on ChatX. Should you encounter any difficulties while using this service, please do not hesitate to contact a helper in #Help or an IRC Operator for further assistance.

In order to send and receive memos, you must have a fully registered nickname. If you don’t have one, type /nickserv HELP REGISTER or visit #Help for assistance.

Listing and Reading Memos

You can view the list of memos currently your nickname holds by typing:

/memoserv LIST

A list similar to the one below will appear:

If the memo is new or deleted, an [X] will be marked in the respective column.

When a memo is sent to you, you are alerted by MemoServ:

-MemoServ- You have just received a new memo.
-
-MemoServ- Type /MemoServ READ 1 to read it.

To read the memo, you will type /memoserv READ 1.

Deleting/purging memos from your memo box

Please be reminded that your memobox can only hold 50 memos at a time. Therefore, you will need to clear up unwanted memos.

If you want to delete a specific memo, type /memoserv LIST to get the memo number. Then type:

/memoserv DEL <memo_number>

For example, if I want to delete memo number 2, I will type:

/memoserv DEL 2

If you wish to undelete the memo, type the following command:

/memoserv UNDEL <memo_number>

So, for the above example it would be: /memoserv UNDEL 2

All deleted memos will be cleared when you disconnect from the network and cannot be recovered when you return. Use this command carefully. The following 2 commands should also be used with caution for once deleted using any of the 2 below, they cannot be recovered.

If you want to delete all memos and you are sure you will not need them recovered, you will type:

/memoserv DEL ALL

If you want to erase deleted memos only (memos which have been deleted by the DEL command), you will type:

/memoserv PURGE

Sending memos to users

You can send memos to other users provided the nickname is fully registered and the NOMEMO option is not enabled. IRC Operators who are Services Operators and above however, can send memos to any user regardless if the NOMEMO option is enabled or not. You are limited to send a limit of 255 characters per memo you send. If you go beyond that limit, you will be alerted and need to reduce it. Example:

-MemoServ- SEND ERROR: Length of memo is too long! (Max: 255 Length: 439)

Keep in mind that memos are not like emails. Anything that needs more than 5 memos must be sent via email as your limit is 5 memos to one person at one time. You will not be able to send anymore memos once you have reached this limit until the recipient deletes some of his memos.

To send a memo to someone, you will type:

/memoserv SEND nickname yourmemotext

For example, if I want to send a memo to SecretAgent, I will type:

/memoserv SEND SecretAgent Please attend tomorrow’s meeting.

Sending memos to channels

When sending memos to channels, the command is slightly different than the one used when sending to users. Sending a memo to a channel will also depend to what level is allowed to send channel memos. Assuming you have the access to send channel memos, you will type the following command:

/memoserv CSEND #channelname <access> memo_here

In the access field, your options are (ALL,AVOICE,AOP,SOP,CFOUNDER). For example, if I want to send a memo to only AOps and above in #chatx, I will type:

/memoserv CSEND #chatx AOP Please welcome Macha our new IRC Operator.

Accessing/deleting sent memos

You can view memos you have sent to people provided it has not been deleted previously by the recipient. The first command below tells details of all sent memos. The second command gives details of a specific memo sent with the message.

/memoserv SENT

Example output:

-MemoServ-  1)  To: PJKevin  Time: [Jan 22 07:12:14 2006]   Read: No   Chan-Memo: No

-MemoServ-  2)  To: PJKevin  Time: [Jan 22 07:13:21 2006]   Read: No   Chan-Memo: No

/memoserv SENT <memo_number>

e.g. /memoserv SENT 2

-MemoServ- Memo 2 from FreezeKing to PJKevin. Time/Date:[Jan 22 07:13:21 2006]

You can also delete sent memos provided the memo has not been read or the recipient has not been notified of the new memo in the memobox. To do so, you will use /memoserv SENT to see the memo number and make sure it is unread and hopefully the user has not been notified. Then type:

/memoserv SENT <memonumber> DEL

For example, if I want to recover memo number 2, I will type /memoserv SENT 2 DEL

Forwarding memos to another nickname

You can forward memos from your current registered nickname to another registered nickname. To do this, make sure that both nicknames do not have NOMEMO option on.

You will type:

/memoserv FORWARD <nickname> < password>

Network news

You can read the network news on updates. MemoServ will inform you if it is updated. After you have finished reading, MemoServ will not inform you of the news until new ones are issued. Using the LIST command will display a list of available news reports. If the index number is given, then the news report of that number is displayed.

/memoserv NEWS (Displays the current network news)

/memoserv NEWS LIST (Displays the list of available news reports)

/memoserv NEWS <index_number>

Memo Settings

The following commands are various settings which help to enhance your use of this service.

Receiving memos via email

You can request MemoServ to send your memos to the email address attached to your nickname. To do this, you will type the following command:

/memoserv SET EMAILMEMOS [ON | OFF]

What if I don’t want to receive memos?

You can set services to disable users from sending you memos by typing the command below. However, it is reminded that Services Operators and above can send memos to users even if NOMEMO is on.

/memoserv SET NOMEMO [ON | OFF]

Memo delivery notification

You can change the way MemoServ notifies you when a memo is sent. Below are the syntax and the options you have:

/memoserv NOTIFY [OPTION]

The options are:

ON - Displays memos when you login, unset /away and when new memos are sent to you.

LOGON - Displays memos every time you log on and identify as well as when you unset /away

NEW - Displays only new memos when they are sent to you.

OFF - No notification of memos.

Notification to sender upon recipient reading memo

When this option is enabled, MemoServ will inform the sender that the memo which was sent to a user has been read.

/memoserv SET RECEIPT [ON | OFF]

If no option is given, it will display whether your RECEIPT option is enabled or disabled.

Conclusion

The MemoServ commands mentioned in this document applies to ChatX Services and should not be assumed that all commands are the same on all IRC Networks. Different networks may or may not have some functions that we do and vice versa. Should you need assistance, feel free to join #Help.\\
