The staff note is used by DareNET staff to determine if a channel has transferred ownership, warnings for AUP violations and/or suspensions. They are to be used in all circumstances of their determined use. While staff notes for moving channels are optional, you should set a new purpose note if the purpose of the channel has changed. Before performing any actions on a channel, you should check if there are any staff notes. Additionally, you should do this before adding on to the note; otherwise, you will override the note that is already present, and that isn't good. However, you are told the previous staff note if you are to make a mistake. Below you will find information on how to properly use the staff note in most situations.

Advertisement Warnings

There may be ocassions where you will have to warn a channel for advertisements. As described in the DareNET AUP, "You may only advertise in channels where you are on the userlist (defined as having an access level of at least '100') or with the channel owner's explicit permission. Directly advertising to DareNET users (e.g. via private messages / notice) is strictly prohibited." However, you must actually see the advertisement taking place. DO NOT take the user's logs, screenshots, or anything similar, as proof that the offending user has advertised. Logs and screenshots can be altered and/or falsified.

The following steps should be taken when warning users for advertisements:

First, check if the user reporting the advertisements has OP+ access to the channel that was advertised in. Secondly, you will need to check if the user advertising has access to the channel that was advertised in (use /chanserv access #channel nick). If the user has access, then this is where you can stop and tell the reporting user that the individual has permission to advertise since they have access to their channel. Otherwise, you will need to check the offending user's access to the channel he/she is advertising. If the user has access but is not the owner, use an account note. If the user is the owner, use a staff note and an account note. The proper way of doing a staff note is below.

Format of staff notes

When setting a staff note you should always add your name and the date when you set it. Since we have staff from lots of countries having different date formats, a format that is clear should be used, e.g. "MMM DD YYYY" or "DDth MMM YYYY" instead of "MM/DD/YY" or "DD.MM.YY".

Examples for good and still short staff notes are "Warned <level> <*account> for ads [myaccount, date]" or "Ownership from inactive <*oldowner> to <level> <*newowner> [myaccount, date]".

Other examples:

  • "Ownership changed from *account (Away for 2w,1d) to *account (prev access) [Date:myaccount]"
  • "Ownership changed from *account to *account. Current owner proved leadership.[Date:myaccount]"
  • "Ownership given to *account. No previous owner. [Date:myaccount]"
  • "Ownership given to *account (provided proof of dev team) from *darenet [Date:myaccount]"
  • "Warned *account for advertising/racism/etc [Date:myaccount]"
  • "Moved #prevchannel to #newchannel [Date:myaccount]"

If there are other staff notes, separate them with " | " and put your note at the end. If you have the problem that there is not enough space anymore to set your note, look what can be removed or shortened. For example, a "channel moved" note can simply be removed. If there is a warning for advertising from maybe a year ago, it would probably be safe to also remove it unless there are less important notes.

If there is a note like "Warned master *xyz for advertising in channel #xyz where he lacks access [account, date]" you could simply shorten it to "Warned 300 *xyz (ads) [account, date]"
