IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, a real-time chat system originally conceived of as a multi-user alternative to a UNIX program known as talk. In IRC, many users connect to a network of interconnected IRC servers with IRC clients. Each user chooses for themselves a nickname, which must be unique at any given time across the network. Users may send messages to one another directly, or they may join channels (what some systems call "chat rooms"), containing one or more users, and send messages to all the users of that channel at once. Channels also have unique names, beginning with a prefix character, usually the "hash" character ("#").
